Getting Started & Scanning
How do I scan a document?#
Open TapScanner and tap the camera or + button to start a new scan. Point your phone so the whole page is in view — TapScanner works in everyday conditions and automatically detects the document edges.
TapScanner detects the document edges automatically and captures the page. If auto-capture is on, it takes the photo for you once the page is in frame; otherwise tap the shutter button.
After capturing, you can adjust the crop, choose a filter, and tap Save to store the scan. From there you can add more pages, run OCR, or export and share.
How can I improve scan quality and edge detection?#
TapScanner is built for everyday conditions, so there's no special setup or lighting to worry about. The app automatically detects the page edges, corrects the perspective, and enhances the scan for you — its filters can remove shadows, sharpen text, and clean up the background.
If you'd like, just fit the whole page in view when you capture. If the auto-detected edges aren't quite right, drag the corner handles on the crop screen to line them up with the document. You can also apply a filter (such as black & white or enhanced) to sharpen text even further.
How do I extract text from a scan with OCR?#
OCR (optical character recognition) turns the text in your scanned image into selectable, editable text.
Open the scanned document and use the IMG to TXT tool. OCR automatically detects the language of the document, so there's no need to select one manually. TapScanner processes the page and returns the text, which you can copy or export.
Applying a high-contrast filter (such as black & white or enhanced) before running OCR can make the characters crisper. OCR is a Premium feature on iOS and free on Android — it depends on the platform, not on a plan.
How do I scan multiple pages into one document?#
TapScanner supports multi-page documents. Select MULTI mode and scan each page one after another until all pages are captured.
You can reorder, retake, or delete individual pages before saving. When you're done, the pages stay together as a single document that you can export as one multi-page PDF.
MULTI mode lets you capture several pages back to back in one document.
Can I scan ID cards or passports?#
Select the Scan ID tool (or pick ID Card or Passport from the camera roll), then lay the card on a contrasting surface with all four corners visible, and let the app detect the edges.
Exporting & Sharing
How do I export a scan as a PDF or JPG?#
Open the document you want to export and tap the Export or Share option. Choose PDF to keep multiple pages together in one file, or Image to save pages as individual pictures.
You can then save the file to your device, send it to another app, or share it directly. Multi-page documents export as a single PDF by default, which is the best choice for paperwork you need to send or print.
Can I convert a scan to Word or plain text?#
Yes. For plain text, use the IMG to TXT tool. For a Word file, use IMG to PDF, then PDF to Word.
How can I reduce or compress a PDF's file size?#
Use the Compress tool to reduce the file size.
Can I password-protect a PDF?#
Yes. Open a PDF, tap the Protect PDF tool, enter a password and confirm it. Anyone you send it to must enter that password to open it.
Subscriptions & Billing
How do I cancel my TapScanner subscription?#
Your subscription is billed and managed by the app store you bought it from, so you cancel it there. Cancelling stops future charges, and you keep Premium until the end of the current billing period.
iPhone / iPad
- Open the App Store app and tap your profile icon
- Tap Subscriptions, select TapScanner, then tap Cancel Subscription
- Or manage it here: Apple subscriptions
Android
- Open the Google Play Store app
- Tap your profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions
- Select TapScanner, then Cancel subscription
- Or manage it here: Google Play subscriptions
How much does TapScanner Premium cost?#
Pricing depends on your country, your platform (App Store or Google Play) and the plan you choose, so the amount shown to you is the accurate one.
To see the current price for your account, open TapScanner and tap the Upgrade button (the crown icon) at the top right of the Home screen — the available plans and their prices are listed there before you confirm anything.
I was charged after my free trial — why?#
Free trials convert into a paid subscription automatically unless you cancel before the trial ends. The store charges you on the first day after the trial as part of how trials work.
To avoid a charge next time, cancel at least a day before the trial ends. Cancelling stops any future charge. On the App Store, access usually continues until the end of the current period; on Google Play, Premium access may end when you cancel. You can manage or cancel anytime in your store account: Apple or Google Play.
How do I restore my purchases?#
If you set up TapScanner again or switched to a new phone, you can bring back a subscription you've already paid for.
On iOS, open TapScanner, go to the Premium or Settings screen, and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account you used for the original purchase, since the store ties the subscription to that account.
On Android, there's no Restore Purchases button — your purchases restore automatically when you install the app signed in with the same Google Play account you used for the purchase.
If your Premium features still don't appear, reach us through the Contact link at the bottom of this page and we'll help.
How do I manage my subscription?#
You can view or cancel your subscription anytime in your store account.
- iPhone / iPad: App Store → your profile icon → Subscriptions → TapScanner.
- Android: Play Store → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → TapScanner.
TapScanner has a single subscription, so there are no separate tiers to switch between. Billing and any changes are handled by your app store.
Does my subscription work on more than one device?#
Yes, within the same app store account. Your Premium subscription is tied to the Apple Account or Google account that bought it, so it works on any device signed in with that account. On iOS, tap Restore Purchases on the new device to activate it; on Android it activates automatically when you sign in with the same Google Play account.
Apple and Google subscriptions don't transfer between each other — a subscription bought on iPhone won't carry over to an Android device, and vice versa.
Refunds
What is your refund policy?#
Purchases of digital goods and subscriptions in TapScanner are non-refundable. Billing is handled entirely by the Apple App Store or Google Play — not by us — so we're unable to issue refunds. You can ask the store directly:
- Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com
- Google Play: Request a Google Play refund
Apple and Google review these requests and decide the outcome under their own policies.
To avoid any future charges, cancel your subscription in your store account so it won't renew again: Apple or Google Play.
Account & Data
Where are my scanned documents stored?#
Your scans are saved on your device, so they're available even offline. They stay there until you delete them or remove the app.
TapScanner does not keep a copy of your documents on our servers, and there is no automatic cloud sync between devices. That means your scans exist only on the phone or tablet you made them on.
Uninstalling the app deletes your saved documents, and they can't be recovered afterwards.
To keep your documents safe, export them yourself: open a document, tap Share / Export, and save it to your own cloud storage (Google Drive, iCloud Drive, Dropbox), email it to yourself, or save it to your photo gallery.
I got a new phone — how do I move my documents?#
Because your scans are stored on the device and are not synced by us, they do not move to a new phone by themselves — and they never transfer between Android and iPhone.
Export them from the old device before you stop using it: open each document, tap Share / Export, and save the PDF to your own cloud storage (Google Drive, iCloud Drive, Dropbox), your email, or your photo gallery. You can then open those files on the new phone.
If you no longer have the old device, or you never exported the files, the documents can't be retrieved — we don't hold a copy of them.
Please note that a subscription bought on Google Play cannot be moved to an iPhone (or the reverse); Apple and Google keep purchases separate.
How do I delete a document?#
Open TapScanner and find the document or folder you want to remove. Press and hold it, or tap the ⋯ / select option, then choose Delete.
Deleting removes the document from the app on your device permanently. Make sure you've exported anything you want to keep before deleting.
Can I recover a deleted scan?#
No. TapScanner has no trash or temporary storage, and scans are stored on your device rather than on a remote server, so a deleted scan can't be recovered.
How do I delete my account and all my data?#
If you're signed in, go to Settings and tap Delete your account to remove your email from our database.
Is my data private and secure?#
We take your privacy seriously. Your scans are stored on your device — we don't upload them to our servers or sync them anywhere. Any copy in cloud storage is one you created by exporting a document to your own account.
We don't sell your documents, and we only use your data as described in our Privacy Policy. For sensitive scans like IDs, you can add extra protection by password-protecting exported PDFs. Our Privacy Policy explains in full what we collect, how it's used, and the choices you have over your data.
Troubleshooting
The app crashes or freezes — how do I fix it?#
Most crashes clear up with a few quick steps:
- Check that your device has enough free storage, since low space can cause crashes.
- Make sure you're on the latest version from the App Store or Google Play.
- Fully close TapScanner and reopen it.
- Restart your phone.
Important — do not uninstall the app to fix it. Your scans are stored on your device, so removing TapScanner permanently deletes the documents saved in it, and they cannot be recovered.
If you do need to reinstall, back up your documents first: open each document and export or share it to your cloud storage (Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox) or save it to your phone's photo gallery. Once your files are safely stored elsewhere, it's safe to reinstall.
If it keeps happening, reach us through the Contact link at the bottom of this page and we'll help.
I can't sign in — what should I do?#
First, check your internet connection, since signing in connects to Google or Apple. Then confirm you're using the same sign-in method and email you originally registered with.
- Try again on a stable Wi-Fi or mobile connection.
- If you forgot your password, use the reset option on the sign-in screen.
- Update the app and restart your phone, then try once more.
If you still can't get in, double-check that you're using the same sign-in method you originally registered with (for example Google vs. Apple vs. email/password), since signing in a different way creates a separate account. Most scans are stored on your device and stay available even while you're signed out.
OCR is recognizing the wrong language or text — how do I fix it?#
OCR automatically detects the language of your document, so there's no language to set manually. Recognition accuracy mostly comes down to how clear the text is in the scan.
To improve accuracy:
- Rescan the page so the text is in focus.
- Use a black & white or enhanced filter so characters are sharp.
- Make sure the whole page is captured.
Handwriting and unusual fonts are harder to recognize and may still need manual correction.
